Theatrette

Last Monday, my group (and other groups of course) presented a theatrette in HBP grounds. We were given the honour of picking our group members, group name, presentation theme and motto. Here's mine:

Group name: Strikers
Group members: Loo Sue Anne, Ngoo Sze Jie, Stephanie James, Tee Woen Xin, Tan Hui Xuan, Yan Sue Wen,  Yeap Shi Jia, Wong Jia Lin, Lim Yen Shan, Tan Sin Wen.
Theme: A better product for a sustainable tomorrow.
Motto: Strike for the best.

Our presentation was to be 3 minutes long. We were required to prepare a video and presentation to be submitted on Monday, 30th August, the eve of our Independence Day.

Lecture and Assignment, Friday, 20 August 2010

Yes, I am repeating the dates with my title. But that's ok, let's just get down to the gist of today's integrated studio lecture and assignment.

Today's lecture was supposed to be on Formal Structure to be conducted by Sr. Mohd. Zahry, but somehow he couldn't make it so Encik Wan had to take over.

Mr. Wan talked briefly about paradigm paralysis (kelumpuhan paradigma) and also anjakan paradigma, translated to be a paradigm shift in English. He also reminded us on the paradigm we function by in the studio, and that is 3P - People, Place, Principle.

We submitted our report on the Times Square Merdeka Countdown event and received comment from Mr. Wan about the way we presented our reports. One thing he said that I clearly remember is "Good ideas must be put on good paper. Good paper must be bound in a good manner". He said that his teacher told him that once upon a time, and I have to agree. You can be sure that I will live by it.

He also touched on form and space.
Here's a couple of things he said that particularly stood out to me (and that I have rephrased):
*Form cannot exist or have no meaning without space.
*Colours hide or enchance form.

By the way, time is very important in design. It is the 4th dimension (aside from length, width and depth) and is essential in all kinds of design. For instance, how on planet earth do you propose to to design something without being gifted with time?

We were also given another assignment. It's to prepare for a theatrette performance, but about that I will share with you another time (as in after the performance).

That's enough rambling for now, hope this image speaks a little something to you.

By the way, I do not plagiarize!

Quick Update

Here's a sketch I did for Ar. Mohd. Najib's assignment that was due last Monday.

Our theme was Convocation. My "sub-theme" is Jazz Band @ Convo.

Today's Lecture: Space/Worlds by Dr. Zailan

Alright, so today Dr. Zailan touched on Space and Worlds. He gave us basic definitions of space and world. Here are a few:

Space;
- unused/unfilled gap or area between objects/points.
- unoccupied area or place available for use.

World;
- everything that exists in the universe.
- earth with all it's countries and peoples.
- heavenly body that may be like the earth.

He also touched on seen space and unseen space.

Unseen space was explained through a series of slides touching on personality, words and paradoxes of life. One example of life's paradox include the fact that we now have taller buildings but shorter tempers, and wider freeways but narrower view
points.

Seen Space was described through a series of slides as well, through some night vision photos, National Geographic photos and the most interesting of the lot, images of the building boom in Dubai.

Anyhow, I'm more interested to post up my thoughts and opinions on this matter as some of us were asked to share with the class our take and our understanding of what was presented by Dr. Zailan.

The Seen and Unseen Merging:
While it is good to take a look at visible space and invisible space as two separate entities, it is vital to look at it and make a connection between them as the two share a very special and important relationship. For example, an architect in designing visible space has to manipulate all that is within his/her invisible space to engage in the production of the aforementioned seen space. The visible space of his/her production is the extension of his/her invisible space.

So, now we or rather I, shall take a look at the offspring of my invisible space, and they are (just) questions. Maybe it will provoke some thoughts in you and challenge you to question certain events, or maybe you can provide me with some answers in reference to these questions:

Regarding Dubai's building boom,
isn't it just a big, fat waste of resources?

Do we really need all those elaborate and exaggerated entertainment, leisure and recreational centers?

Why isn't some of these resources used to build homes for the homeless instead?

How does the act of the rich affect the poor? Will these mega structures give a chance to the poor to change their fate or will it oppress them further?

I think the biggest question here is, why does Dubai use so much money to build empty buildings to be filled, and not use that same money to fill already existent empty stomachs and souls?

Give it some thought.

Let not your mind be chained by conformity.

May the grace of God be with you,
Stephanie J.

Black Box, COMPLETED!

I'm slightly terkilan because when I wanted to snap photos of my black box, my camera went out of battery! Memang terkilan! So I used my phone's camera instead. Forgive the low quality (and pixel count) of the following photos:

I've name it Deboxer because it releases balloons (de-box them) and this box is not shaped as a typical box, it's more like an upturned tent. By the way, this box is can be folded to reduce storage space and to make it more mobile. Here are more photos:

That's all for this post!!
